Six people were injured in a single-vehicle accident in St Ann’s yesterday when the vehicle they were travelling in ran off the road and into a house a short distance from the Diplomatic Centre.
Details were still coming in up to press time yesterday but the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) public information officer Michelle Lewis told Guardian Media the six occupants were taken to hospital for treatment.
It was unclear at the time if there were any fatalities.
The accident occurred after midday and videos began circulating on social media of three of the occupants.
One was covered in blood crawling from the wreck, another was lying on the floor and one was being attended to by a female.
When Guardian Media visited the scene, the victims were already transferred to hospital and the police were removing the vehicle from the property.
The owner of the home, David St Cyr said the property is being rented out and no one was home at the time of the incident.
“We received reports from neighbours that a car crashed into the property so immediately we jumped in our cars and came here only to find that the car was on the side,” he said.
St Cyr said this is the second time a vehicle traversing the road crashed into his wall, the first being “many years ago.”
He said while he is comforted knowing no one was home at the time of the incident, his main concern is for the lives of the vehicle’s occupants.
“Who cares about damage to property? It’s life that we should be focusing on at this point. I mean that wall could easily (be) repaired,” he said.
While the cause of the accident is still being determined, he questioned if the occupants were returning home from a New Year’s party and urged the population to be responsible and vigilant as the nation’s biggest party period, Carnival, approaches.
