Minister in the Ministry of Works and Transport Richie Sookhai says Local Government reform will ease the bureaucracy involved in completing projects. He said for too long burgesses have to wait for unreasonable lengths of time for services.
Sookhai, who visited the Chaguanas Market over the weekend, said during his tenure as president of the Chaguanas Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the group had lobbied the Chaguanas Borough Corporation to repair the run-down facilities at the market. However, several years later, meat vendors are still operating in the same deplorable conditions with only one freezer in operation and air-conditioning units not working.
The heat in that area of the market causes meat to spoil quickly.
Sookhai said he might be able to lobby for some relief, but reform would ensure that regional corporations have the autonomy to undertake projects without being subjected to the whims and fancies of those in authority.
“What we want is greater benefits for the people in the shortest possible time,” he said.
