Police say they are investigating the disappearance of businessman Komal Maharaj, 40, as a kidnapping, even though they have classified the matter as a missing person.
Police said Maharaj, of Lyne Lane, off Maha Sabha Street, Felicity, was last seen at Price Plaza, Chaguanas, around 2 pm on Friday. The father of two was believed to have withdrawn money from an ATM minutes before he disappeared.
When Guardian Media visited his home, relatives said they wished not to speak about his disappearance. They thanked the public for their concerns and expressions of support.
At the time of Maharaj’s disappearance, he was wearing jeans, a red jersey, and a grey hoodie.
No ransom demand has been made to date, police said.
Speaking on the issue, MP for Chaguanas West Dinesh Rambally said the Anti-Kidnapping Unit (AKU) has been working with the family to solve the disappearance. Rambally spoke with Guardian Media at a shopping plaza at Munroe Road, Chaguanas.
He said he could not give any details on the matter but assured that the AKU was investigating it.
At Maha Sabha Street, residents said the disappearance left the community feeling uneasy. The two residents seen and spoken to did not want to be identified but said the disappearance was “a real sad thing.”
The men said they hoped Maharaj was found soon and healthy.
