In a bizarre incident yesterday, a man who was arrested by police smashed the window of a police vehicle with his head following a violent fracas with officers in Penal and then proceeded to chew the broken glass.

The incident occurred around 2 am after four officers from the Penal Police Station responded to a report of a breach of a protection order and death threats at Beemul Branch Trace, San Francique Road, Penal.

When they arrived, police said, the suspect was wielding a cutlass and threatening to kill his neighbours—who are related to him—and burn down their home.

Police said the victims had been granted a protection order against the suspect some time ago, and they also have an ongoing arson matter before the court. They told police that the 36-year-old man threw gasoline on their home and attempted to set it on fire. The officers attempted to arrest the suspect who resisted, and a struggle ensued.

During the fight, the suspect struck one of the officers several times and repeatedly spat on another one. He was eventually subdued, arrested, handcuffed, and placed in the rear seat of the police vehicle.

Police said the suspect then headbutted the window, causing it to shatter, and began biting shards of glass and chewing them.

The suspect and one of the officers were treated at the Siparia Health Facility and discharged.

Police said the suspect is expected to be charged with several offences.
