Security is being increased at Mount St Benedict following a daylight robbery at the monastery on Tuesday.
At about 2 pm, a young woman was robbed of her cellphone and her black Honda City motor vehicle. The victim, who did not want to be identified, said she is still traumatised by the incident. She said she had just parked her vehicle and was walking toward the church when a car drove up and its occupants came out and accosted her demanding that she hand over the sensor to her car.
“I had my phone in my hand and they took it away from me and kept demanding that I hand over my sensor for my car. My key was to the bottom of the bag and eventually I got it after one of the men lifted his jersey and showed me a gun. He took the key and left with my phone and car,” the woman said.
Abbot John Pereira said security at the monastery will be increased to ensure visitor safety.
“The administration of the monastery is seeking to establish some more visible security presence at the Abbey and the monks of Mount St Benedict Monastery are recommitting themselves to offer the only alternative to violence which is pax, the Pax Benedictina, the peace of Benedict, the Benedictine peace,” he said.
