A landslip near Timital junction worsened on Thursday night and has now taken part of the road with it. The situation developed just hours after residents held a protest calling for immediate assistance to remedy the situation, saying it was threatening their homes.
While the landslip was large when Guardian Media visited on Thursday during the protest, the roadway above was still intact. However, by yesterday morning, part of the road was also beginning to fall into the cavity.
Resident Rishi Ramroopsingh said he and his wife heard when the collapsed section of the road landed in the bamboo patch at the base of the hill. He said this was the latest in a series of collapses they observed after the protest during Thursday’s heavy rains.
“It’s very disturbing right now. I on work right now and my madame very scared at home because here’s what going on, she’s still hearing the bamboo crackling and the land moving. Rain continuously falling,” he said.
He repeated calls for the authorities to step in and lend assistance.
On Thursday, Ramroopsingh and neighbour Kissmatie Rajram said they believed a leaking Water and Sewerage Authority line was to blame for undermining the land. However, while WASA maintained their line was not at fault, Avocat/San Francique North councillor Doodnath Mayrhoo called on the authority to redo their investigation. He also called on Minister of Works and Transport Rohan Sinanan to intervene.
