Head of TTPS Tobago Division, Senior Superintendent Earl Elie, is reminding political leaders and supporters in Tobago that “there is life after elections” as police continue to work behind the scenes to ensure the island remains peaceful during the campaign season.
He told Guardian Media that while the police have not formally brought all leaders together, discussions with individual parties are ongoing.
“We have been in communication with them and gathering the information we need to help structure our duties and so forth,” he said.
Asked whether there had been any troubling behaviour so far, Elie responded:
“Well, on Nomination Day there was one incident, but since then, we’ve had no such reoccurrence. We don’t anticipate any, however, we are not putting anything past anybody.”
He added that officers are prepared for any eventualities and are engaging directly with key influencers within the various political parties.
“ Quite certain we are one people. One nation, one people—sweet Tobago,” Elie said, appealing for a calm and respectful election season.
Clarifying recent reports about a supposed meeting with political representatives, Elie said:
“It wasn’t a meeting per se. It was just to find out their itinerary—when they would have their motorcades and those sorts of things. It’s just to provide proper security and support.”
