The second suspect in the police-involved killings on Thursday night in Tobago is a Trinidadian. Senior Superintendent Rodhil Kirk said yesterday that no relative has yet positively identified the body. However, he said reliable sources have confirmed the suspect is from Toco.
Police said Buccoo resident Jamal Clarke, 24, was a passenger in a silver Toyota Aqua driving along Golden Grove Road, Buccoo, around 7 pm, when police intercepted the vehicle, following intelligence received. As officers approached the car, they were allegedly met with gunfire.
They fired back, hitting both occupants. Police said one firearm was retrieved at the scene. A police officer, who was shot during the exchange, is in stable condition.
Kirk assured relatives of the men killed that an independent investigation will be conducted.
Asked to respond to claims by Clarke’s father, Levi Clarke, that police “murdered” his son, Kirk said he did not have all the information and promised to provide updates to relatives. — Stephon Nicholas
