An Adverse Weather Alert/YELLOW Level was activated at 5 am today, and will remain in effect until 5 pm, according to an advisory from the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS).
Met Service forecasters say there is a high (70%) chance that the passage of a tropical wave will result in heavy showers/thunderstorms, initially favouring Tobago during the morning, and then over Trinidad by late morning into the afternoon.
According to the Met Service, these thunderstorms can produce intense rainfall of over 25 mm. Street and/or flash flooding are possible in areas so prone, causing minor traffic disruptions. In addition, electrical discharges are likely, and the threat of gusty winds also will be present. These wind gusts may be brief, but are capable of breaking tree branches, displacing unsecured roofs and loose outdoor objects, and can even topple over unhealthy trees.
The public is encouraged to avoid wading or driving through flood waters. In addition, efforts should be made to secure loose outdoor items and livestock.
The Met Service advises the public to monitor weather conditions and official updates. It says updates will be made available at its website (www.metoffice.gov.tt/) and that of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (www.odpm.gov.tt), and their respective social media portals.
