T&TEC crews on standby to restore power in Tobago

Gen­er­al Man­ag­er of Trinidad and To­ba­go Elec­tric­i­ty Com­mis­sion (T&TEC) Curvis Fran­cois says his crews will mo­bilise in To­ba­go as soon as it’s safe to do to. His com­ment comes as there are sev­er­al re­ports of pow­er out­age on the is­land as Hur­ri­cane Beryl af­fects main­ly To­ba­go.

“Hur­ri­cane con­di­tions are now be­ing ex­pe­ri­enced in To­ba­go and feed­ers have start­ed to trip,” he said.

Pow­er out­ages have been record­ed in sev­er­al ar­eas in­clud­ing Bethel, Mt.Irvine, Rox­bor­ough, Char­lot­teville, Mt Grace, Mo­ri­ah, Cas­tara, Bloody Bay, Idle Wile, Ar­gyle, Ma­son Hall, Calder Hall , Black Rock, Les Coteaux and Scar­bor­ough.

“All we could do now is to brace and hope and pray for the best,” he added.

Ac­cord­ing to the Trinidad & To­ba­go Me­te­o­ro­log­i­cal Ser­vice a Hur­ri­cane Warn­ing is in ef­fect for To­ba­go. This means there is a high­er po­ten­tial for hur­ri­cane con­di­tions, in­clud­ing sus­tained winds in ex­cess of 118 km/h, with­in the warn­ing area, in this case with­in the next 10 hours. As of 2 am, Hur­ri­cane Beryl was lo­cat­ed near 11.5°N 59.1°W, ap­prox­i­mate­ly 155km east – north­east of To­ba­go, mov­ing west near 31 km/h.
