Multiple areas across Trinidad were left without electricity on Monday afternoon. According to a senior employee at Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC), the power loss was due to an under-frequency generator at Trinidad Generation Unlimited (TGU), one of T&T's power plants.
The official explained, "Because of the generator's issue, multiple areas across Trinidad would have lost power until the generator synchronizes."
Power outages were reported across Port-of-Spain, Cunaripo Village, Couva, Cunupia, El Dorado, Arouca, Siparia, Fyzabad, Tunapuna, Avocat, Chaguanas, Munroe Road, O'Mera, La Romain, San Juan, Arima, and St Augustine.
These outages were outside of the planned maintenance areas for Monday including parts of Valsayn and Marabella.
These power outages came on the heels of widespread TV, internet, and phone line outages from Flow early yesterday morning.
While the outages were unrelated, Flow first logged issue occurred at 7:30 am. Engineers identified the cause as "unplanned failure of critical equipment."
According to Flow, "As a result, customers in Central and South Trinidad experienced loss of or degraded services such as slower internet speeds and intermittent buffering when using broadband services."
Flow said by 2 pm on Monday full connectivity was restored for customers who may have experienced issues with their broadband, TV, and fixed voice services.
It apologised to customers for the inconvenience.
