The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), through its Northern Division, is investigating the attempted disposal of 56 human bodies on Saturday in the Cumuto District.
In a release yesterday, TTPS said a multi-agency response involving TTPS investigators and other State authorities is ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the matter.
“Statements are currently being taken from persons of interest as inquiries continue. Preliminary findings suggest that some of the recovered bodies were labelled, with initial information pointing to possible links to a health institution,” the release said.
TTPS said investigators are working to verify these details.
“Efforts are underway to confirm the identities of the deceased, analyse forensic evidence, liaise with health authorities and the Regional Corporation, and determine whether any laws were breached,” the release added.
In a statement yesterday, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said she has been advised that the corpses discovered at the Cumuto Cemetery were actually unclaimed bodies that were being improperly disposed off and not victims of Homicide.
“This matter will also be resolved in the coming days.”
The authorities have said the matter is being treated with seriousness and sensitivity, and updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
