The Trinidad and To­ba­go Po­lice Ser­vice (TTPS), through its North­ern Di­vi­sion, is in­ves­ti­gat­ing the at­tempt­ed dis­pos­al of 56 hu­man bod­ies on Sat­ur­day in the Cu­mu­to Dis­trict.

In a re­lease yes­ter­day, TTPS said a mul­ti-agency re­sponse in­volv­ing TTPS in­ves­ti­ga­tors and oth­er State au­thor­i­ties is on­go­ing to es­tab­lish the full cir­cum­stances sur­round­ing the mat­ter.

“State­ments are cur­rent­ly be­ing tak­en from per­sons of in­ter­est as in­quiries con­tin­ue. Pre­lim­i­nary find­ings sug­gest that some of the re­cov­ered bod­ies were la­belled, with ini­tial in­for­ma­tion point­ing to pos­si­ble links to a health in­sti­tu­tion,” the re­lease said.

TTPS said in­ves­ti­ga­tors are work­ing to ver­i­fy these de­tails.

“Ef­forts are un­der­way to con­firm the iden­ti­ties of the de­ceased, analyse foren­sic ev­i­dence, li­aise with health au­thor­i­ties and the Re­gion­al Cor­po­ra­tion, and de­ter­mine whether any laws were breached,” the re­lease added.

In a state­ment yes­ter­day, Prime Min­is­ter Kam­la Per­sad-Bisses­sar said she has been ad­vised that the corpses dis­cov­ered at the Cu­mu­to Ceme­tery were ac­tu­al­ly un­claimed bod­ies that were be­ing im­prop­er­ly dis­posed off and not vic­tims of Homi­cide.

“This mat­ter will al­so be re­solved in the com­ing days.”

The au­thor­i­ties have said the mat­ter is be­ing treat­ed with se­ri­ous­ness and sen­si­tiv­i­ty, and up­dates will be pro­vid­ed as the in­ves­ti­ga­tion pro­gress­es.
