The Visit Trinidad Road March competition is on with contenders such as Bunji Garlin, Nailah Blackman and Skinny Fabulous, Machel Montano and Olantunji, the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organization (TUCO) has confirmed.
“Every Carnival the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organization (TUCO) as the official authority for declaring the Road March winner, tabulates the number of times the popular songs are played at official judging points along the parade route,” TUCO explained in a news release issued today.
TUCO is reminding the public that the Road March winner is usually announced on Ash Wednesday or soon after.
“This prestigious award is one that adds to the Carnival history books every year,” TUCO says. “Looking forward to the exciting announcement to come, on who will be declared the Visit Trinidad Road March Champion!”
The calypsonians lobby group recounted key milestones in Road March history.
“The late Lord Kitchener still holds the record for most number of wins with 11 in total and is closely followed by Austin “Superblue” Lyons with ten Road March titles, and Slinger Francisco better known as “The Mighty Sparrow” with eight wins,” TUCO points out.
TUCO has partnered with Tourism Trinidad this year, to announce the ‘Visit Trinidad Road March’ Champion. The winner will receive a grand prize of $250,000 and recognition as the latest in a long line of the most popular songs on the road since 1932.
