KERWIN SHOOTING

A shooting incident on Queen Street, Port-of-Spain yesterday, resulted in the deaths of two men and left a teenage girl hospitalised with gunshot wounds.

Police launched a massive search for the killer, who they engaged briefly along Eastern Main Road with an exchange of gunfire. Three men were later detained.

According to a police report, at about 2.25 pm gunmen alighted a white car and opened fire on a group of persons on Queen Street, near Duncan Street. The gunmen then drove off.

A report was made to the police who responded and found three persons suffering from gunshot injuries.

They were taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital for treatment.

They have been identified as Shakira Mona, 18, who was shot in the leg and arm; Aaron “Max” Broomes was shot in the head and Kayode “Toes” Donawa was shot multiple times. Broomes and Donawa succumbed to their injuries at hospital. Mona’s condition was listed as serious.

Police issued an All-Points Bulletin and a vehicle matching the make and number plate was spotted along the Eastern Main Road, Laventille.

Officers attempted to intercept the vehicle, but its occupants opened fire on them. Officers returned fire but the suspects managed to escape but police later held three suspects.

No police officer was injured during the exchange.

The vehicle was subsequently impounded.

Recent shooting

On December 31, six people were shot in Port-of-Spain when gunmen from Sea Lots went on a rampage in the capital city.

One of the ten—53-year-old Lystra Hernandez-Patterson—died at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital and three of the four gunmen were killed by police within minutes of the shooting.

The gunmen, who were in a black Nissan Tiida, tried to escape but when they crashed the getaway car in the vicinity of the Central Market on the outskirts of the city, they fled on foot, shooting at police officers who were in pursuit.

Three of the gunmen were killed.
