The two suspects who were detained on Wednesday in connection with the robbery of Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh, remained in police custody yesterday.
Senior police officials confirmed this as they assured the investigation was continuing.
Investigators said several people were assisting officers with the probe, but no one else has been detained or arrested.
Guardian Media understands that no charges have been laid against anyone.
Deyalsingh, 66, was robbed of his gold bracelet (bera) by two bandits in his constituency of St Joseph on Tuesday (September 17).
The minister was outside Nyabinghi Bar, at the intersection of King and Abercromby Streets, at 4.55 pm when the men – one of whom was armed with a gun – walked up and put the firearm to his head, demanding that he hand over the bracelet.
The men then escaped in a waiting car.
Police said the blue Hyundai Elantra car the suspects escaped in was recovered hours later at St Paul Street, Port-of-Spain, while two men were also taken into custody.
The incident attracted widespread criticism from all quarters, including the Opposition United National Congress (UNC) and the Criminal Bar Association (CBA); as well as residents in Deyalsingh’s constituency.
Some St Joseph residents said while it was good that Deyalsingh had walked away unharmed, the quick work by the police to investigate the crime and apprehend two suspects within hours, underscored just how skewed the justice system was.
Soon after the incident, the Health Minister told Guardian Media he was fine. But on Wednesday, he said he was “shaken.”
