Two women were robbed while walking along the jogging track at Palmiste Park around 7:45 a.m. on Thursday.
President of the Palmiste Historical Society, Terrence Honore, told Guardian Media that a neighbour was alerted to the incident near the Mini Cocoa Estate.
“One neighbour, armed with his revolver, went searching in the direction of the food huts. Police were alerted,” Honore said.
He said the women were robbed of a cellphone and a small amount of cash. Their identities were not immediately known, but they were described as regular walkers in the area.
Honore added that safety and maintenance of the park remain concerns for residents.
“The Palmiste community recently raised $7,800 to cut the area with a tractor and wackers. Altogether, we have committed over $10,000 to cut and maintain areas of the park,” he said.
He said the Palmiste Historical Society and the Palmiste Park Action Committee have been working to keep the jogging track clear, with support from Qualis Maintenance Company, which provided cutting services.
According to Honore, the Palmiste District Recreation Council said it was awaiting approval from the Ministry of Agriculture to provide further assistance.
Police are continuing investigations into the robbery.
