A woman is in critical condition after being struck by an out-of-control vehicle while attempting to cross the road on Wednesday.
Police said the woman suffered extensive injuries and was unresponsive at the Intensive Care Unit of the San Fernando General Hospital. Another female pedestrian also sustained serious injuries and remains hospitalised in stable condition.
The women were crossing the Main Road near the Arena Complex, Point Fortin when around 11.55 am, a man driving a black Toyota Fielder wagon attempted to avoid them.
The driver lost control of the vehicle, which slammed into the women.
As seen on CCTV footage of the accident, one of the women was thrown into the air and landed on the pavement while the other was dragged under the vehicle.
The driver, a 39-year-old clerk from Point Fortin, told police he lost control after his vehicle skidded and spun three times.
He was taken to the nearby police station, where a breathalyser test was conducted, which he passed. The driver was released pending further investigations.
Officers of the Point Fortin Police Station are investigating.
