Tell T&T what were the tangibles from the trip.
That’s the call from United National Congress whip David Lee, who wants Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley to detail exactly what Rowley’s recent overseas energy mission will bring T&T over the next year.
At yesterday’s UNC media briefing at the Opposition’s Port-of-Spain office, Lee demanded accountability when Rowley stages a media conference today following his return from abroad, after what he deemed was the PM’s overseas “joyride.” He criticised Government’s energy sector management.
“What is he coming to tell T&T that he hasn’t told the country in the last seven days, as we’ve seen a lot of boardroom pictures? The Prime Minister went to Doha, from which we heard no meaningful contributions and his US trip, which hasn’t produced any results I’m aware of,” Lee added.
Lee said he hoped Rowley was coming to tell T&T of increased oil and gas production and new foreign direct investment worth millions.
“But we feel (the trip) was a PR stunt for the last seven days, as the 2023 Budget is in two weeks,” Lee said, adding the energy sector’s history hasn’t borne fruit
“So, we won’t be surprised if the Finance Minister and Prime Minister come with fluff in the energy sector – ‘coming attractions’. But the movie business was killed by COVID ... so don’t talk of ‘coming attractions’ up to 2025. Tell us what tangibles will come over the next 12 months. We’ve seen none from previous trips.”
Lee repeated his query on if Rowley’s trip to Proman’s Germany plant had to do with “selling” Clico’s methanol plant shares.
On Niquan’s approval to restart operations, Lee said he’d called for the report into the April 2021 Niquan explosion to be made public – but he and the Battoo Avenue community were told nothing.
