While thousands of Muslims are celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr with their loved ones today, many more are mourning the sudden loss of their sister and friend, Azizah Mohammed.
Mohammed, 38, who tragically lost her life in a cross-over collision along the Solomon Hochoy Highway, Gasparillo, on Monday, was buried in an Islamic ceremony yesterday.
Paying tribute to her during the ceremony, held at the Barakah Grounds in Chaguanas, businessman and social activist Inshan Ishmael said the women’s ward of the Barakah Medical Facility will be named in her honour.
Ishmael said, “A special gift that we will be bestowing on our dear late sister, and that is the women’s ward, will be named the A Mohammed Women’s Ward. It is the least we can do because we cannot forget her and we will not forget her. Because every time we go up on that first floor and we walk through that corridor and we walk to the right, we will see the A Mohammed’s Women’s Ward.”
The hospital, also located at the Barakah Grounds, is currently under construction. He described Mohammed as a healthy, good person, noting she was preparing to put together hundreds of boxes for Eid celebrations today.
According to relatives, the Cunupia mother of three and her husband, Hassan Hosein, were in their grey Hyundai Accent heading south on Monday when Mohammed lost control of the vehicle and crossed the median.
The car then crashed into a Ford Ranger, which was heading in a northerly direction. Mohammed died at the scene. Her husband was unable to attend her funeral because he remained in stable condition at the San Fernando Hospital up until last evening.
Her daughters, 12-year-old Asma, 16-year-old Sumayyah, and Amirah, who turned 18 yesterday, wept next to their mother’s coffin as scores of people supported them on the last day of Ramadan.
