The victim of a horrific chopping attack, Sahadaye Ramnath, 62, is appealing for assistance to rebuild her home or at least construct a one-room structure where she can live.

Ramnath was chopped about the face and hands allegedly by a man she had known well for the past 27 years.

Despite the horrific incident, Ramnath said she has forgiven her attacker but does not wish to be anywhere near him again.

She said since the attack on December 20, she has had trouble sleeping.

Ramnath said she wakes up in the middle of the night trembling in fear that the man, who allegedly severed her thumb and chopped her about her face with a cutlass, may return to finish her off.

Recalling the terror, Ramnath said that Friday she was released from the hospital after being admitted to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex on December 18, after suffering a heart attack. Ramnath said she was resting later that evening when the 93-year-old man struck her with a blade. Ramnath said she used her hands to prevent being struck further by the cutlass as she pleaded for the man to release her.

“I turn so to open the door because it was locked, when I try to open the door, I see meh finger,” she cried.

“Me eh have no finger again,” Ramnath wept.

Ramnath said she ran to the nearby police station and was later taken to the hospital.

She lost all her belongings in the fire at her house which was allegedly set by the suspect.

Ramnath said she worked hard with the Unemployment Relief Programme to build her house. She said she was given a State grant in 2019 and completed her home.

Since the incident, Ramnath now lives with her daughter Zeena Kadil. She is forced to share a bedroom at Kadil’s house which has no electricity. Ramnath also has to sleep under a net to avoid mosquitoes at night.

Councillor for Longdenville, Brenda John, said she would reach out to the relevant ministries to assist Ramnath.

“Nobody reached out to her, while others were enjoying Christmas, she is there suffering. Reach out to her and help her,” she urged.

When contacted, Minister of Social Development and Family Services Donna Cox said, “We will stay on it to assist as much as we can.”

ASP Dipchand of the Chaguanas Police said 93-year-old Harold Baptiste, appeared before High Court Master Whitney Franklin on December 24 where he was charged with wounding with intent.

He is expected to reappear in court on January 25, 2025.
