Young and aspiring Chutney Soca artiste have been told now is the time to hold persons in high office, including organisers and stakeholders accountable for their actions.
This came as teachers protested yesterday at the Brian Lara Promenade for the delay salary negation and forced a low turn out of teacher support at the School’s Intellectual National Carnival Chutney Soca Monarch (SINCCSM) prize-giving functions at the NCC VIP Lounge, Queen’s Park Savannah in Port of Spain.
Vice president of the Tassa Association of Trinidad and Tobago Wendell Eversley said it is a usual trend for teachers to be absent from the classroom to protest of better wages, but at no time, pupils protest.
In his remarks, Eversley said it is time educators account and pupils.
“Teachers striking for better wages, you don’t hear about school children striking, and I think one day the school children should strike to make teachers accountable. They want to blame the children for some of the problems that taking place in the schools today. I want you to start holding persons in high offices to account to you all,” Eversley said.
Eversley also called on the governor of culture under Youth Government Brandon Valley to be held make representation for the artiste to the head of state indicating that SINCCSM is doing a good job and to include special prizes for the juniors and seniors.
Also cognizant of the efforts made by the primary and secondary school pupils achievements were Curriculum Coordinator for Visual and Performing Art in the Ministry of Education Marceline Peters who called on pupils to believe in themselves. She urged them to look back at their performances last Carnival and finds ways to better their skills.
Avindha Singh of Tamana Hindu Primary School and Mackhadyon Charles of Miracle Ministries High School cupped the primary and secondary school challenges trophies respectively.
Singh also won the most original melody in the primary school category. Dabria Baptiste won the special category for best lyrics and the people’s choice went to Leonidus Sammy.
In the secondary school category, Charles won the people’s choice and best lyrics went to Bethany Lightbourne while the most original melody was awarded to Adana Dardaine.
