For the third time this week, a woman has been killed in circumstances that investigators have linked to domestic violence. Gabriella Dubarry, 28, an insurance agent, was shot three times, allegedly by a man she knew at her home on Jebhodsingh Avenue, Avocat Village, yesterday morning.
Reports are that Dubarry was at home with her parents at around 10.20 am when the suspect entered the house, walked into her bedroom and shot her. The mother of one died at the scene.
Eyewitnesses said three gunshots were heard, then a man was seen running from the house into nearby bushes. A suspect was detained by the police a short distance from the house.
Dubarry’s murder comes in the same week that Pollyann Chuniesingh and Jezelle Phillip were killed in suspected cases of domestic violence.
Officers from the South Western Division led by Snr Supt Gomez-Cooper and Supt Ramphal visited the scene and yesterday afternoon a team from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region Three led by Insp Corrie was gathering statements. They are looking into reports the victim had made to the police of domestic abuse and threats to her life.
Dubarry had recently sought a protection order and the case was listed for hearing at the Siparia Magistrates Court.
Dubarry’s relatives did not speak to the media yesterday but the Guardian Life employee was said to be rebuilding her life after leaving an abusive relationship and had moved back to her parent’s home.
Councillor for Mon Desir Deryck Bowrin said he was at a council meeting when he got a phone call about the murder. He said he knew Du Barry’s family and she previously worked at the Siparia Regional Corporation, so he went to the home to offer support.
Bowrin said it was disturbing that violence against women was becoming so widespread and he appealed for the problem be addressed.
“This is becoming a regular thing in this country all of a sudden and it is very disturbing. This is the second of this year and just this month alone and we’re on the ninth day. This is very disturbing and I really want to appeal to the families to have some sort of control of their behaviour at this time,” he said.
On Monday, the first day of school began tragically for pupils of the Baby’s Pre-School who saw their principal being brutally stabbed in what police have described as an incident of domestic violence.
Around 7.20 am on Monday Philip was at her pre-school located at the corner of Independence Square and George Street, Port-of-Spain when she was attacked by a man she knew. She was stabbed several times about the body. The man ran away but later surrendered to the police at the Besson Street Police Station.
Chuniesingh, 31, was strangled along with her brother Damian, 39, and their uncle Randy in Arima earlier this week. A suspect was arrested on Monday night.
Investigators are looking into reports that Chuniesingh had recently fled from her home after being beaten by a man she knew.
