An argument over a dance with a young woman on Carnival Tuesday ended with the murder of a national youth boxer.
Police said 18-year-old Prince Charles was enjoying Last Lap festivities on the Eastern Main Road around 10.30 pm when he got into an argument with a man over a dance (wine) with a woman.
The man had reportedly claimed the woman was his relative.
The argument escalated into a fight and during the scuffle, the 57-year-old man pulled out a knife and stabbed Charles in the chest before running away.
However, the suspect was held nearby by officers from the Sangre Grande Police Station.
Responding officers took Charles, who lived at Guaico, to the Sangre Grande Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at 10.49 pm.
Investigators said the knife, believed to be the murder weapon, was also seized, with the blade appearing to be six inches in length.
Charles’ killing has left classmates at the Sangre Grande Secondary School and his relatives in mourning.
During yesterday morning’s general assembly, the Form Five student’s classmates and other students learnt about his death.
A source said the principal and staff extended their condolences to his family as teachers paid tribute to Charles, describing him as a disciplined and intelligent student.
The physical education teacher said Charles’ main goal was to become a renowned boxing champion.
When Guardian Media visited his relatives in Guaico, his father Ryan Solomon could not hide his emotions.
He said Charles was loving and was focused on a boxing career. He said his son fought in countries like Panama, the United States andPuerto Rico, and won several medals and trophies.
He said the teen wanted to be a soldier but fell in love with boxing. Solomon said Charles was preparing for exams and used to wash cars to earn extra cash.
The teen’s mother, Friday Charles-Solomon, said he never participated in Carnival activities and this year was the first time he had gone.
She said a relative came to her house trembling and telling her “Prince now get stabbed and is unconscious. Get up, let’s go!”
She said when she arrived at the Sangre Grande Hospital, she saw her son’s body.
“Only a few hours ago, he had that pleasant smile on his face. I can’t believe that was my son. He was strong and healthy and why he had to die in this cruel manner is unfair,” she said as she broke down in tears. The parents are calling for justice.
