Jaheem Alexander and Joshua De Silva made strong bids for selection on the country’s elite youth team for the Caribbean Boxing Championships in St Lucia from December 10–15, with wins on Sunday at Skinner Park, San Fernando.
The card was the last event on the local boxing calendar and was crucial for the development of the sport, based on the program of the T&T Boxing Association. Alexander of the Golden Fist Boxing Gym faced Shawn Ramnath (Faith Boxing Gym) in a 30-38kg contest and did just enough to prevail on points.
De Silva (Golden Fist), feeding on the triumph of Alexander, later followed in his footsteps by beating Christian Gomez on points soon after to make a claim for selection to the national team.
Meanwhile, Kadeem Chandler (Faith BG) was also in the winner’s row when he disposed of Daniel Caraballo (Prodigy BG) on points, and Kozo Martin destroyed Keifer Sanderia of the De Silva Stars Boxing Gym.
There were also wins for Angelo Alleng of the Golden Fist Club, who brushed aside Jaheem Gomez; Stephon Ali, who got the better of Alyion Dalrymple of the Biomel Boxing Gym on points; and Shalom Phillip, the Golden Fist Gym fighter, who clobbered Jemel Joseph in their 63.5-67 kg contest.
In two other fights, Jadeon Castillano whipped Stanley Brooks in a 67-71kg bout, and Jeremiah Thomas, who represented T&T at the first World Boxing Qualification Tournament for the Paris Olympics earlier this year in Busto Arsizio, Italy, cruised to victory on points against Codel Lee.
