Fifty-two-year old champion jockey of T&T Ricky Jadoo took the 2018 Jockey's Championship title after a gruelling battle with Brian Boodramsing which ended on Boxing Day last year. Jadoo took the honour when he repelled the challenge of Boodramsing to hold on by one win.
Jadoo created history by becoming the oldest jockey to win the Trinidad Derby, when he piloted the Glenn Mendez trained Merlin Samlalsingh owned Cape Canaveral to victory on Republic Day - September 24th.
Glenn Mendez became the champion trainer in both categories, Wins and Earnings, as he produced Cape Canaveral to win the Derby in impressive fashion.
The champion owner was again Shivam Maharaj who has now assumed control of this award. Maharaj thirty-two horses scored 34 wins for earnings of $1,386.9998 including the Gold Cup which was won by his Nuclear Power.
However, the racehorse which topped the Earning’s category was the John O’Brien trained General JN which was beaten in the Derby by Cape Canaveral. General Jn scored four victories and finished one second and one fourth from six starts to earn $296,316 for the year. Cape Canaveral which has raced unbeaten in four starts was just some $23,000 back in second.
