Defence Force men and Magnolias women were crowned new champions of the Open Divisions while Queen’s Park Cricket Club veterans retained their title when the 19th Ventures Hockey Club International Invitational Indoor Hockey Tournament ended at the Woodbrook Youth Facility, Hamilton-Holder Street, Woodbrook, on Sunday.
Coming up against Queen’s Park Cricket Club (QPCC) in the final, the Army/Coast-Guard combination raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to Shaquille Daniel’s first-minute opener, and Caleb Guisseppie’s 13th-minute strike as they signalled their intentions to keep hold of their crown.
However, before the half, Shawn Lee Quay pulled one back for the Parkites in the 14th to keep his team in the mix in the 30-minute clash.
Three minutes into the second half, the in-form Jordan Vieira drew the Parkites level at 2-2 after which both teams failed to find the winner in regulation time, sending the contest to the dreaded penalty-strokes shoot-out where Defence Force prevailed 4-2 to exact revenge on their top-of-the-table Pool A clash on Saturday night which the Parkites won 4-2 on a hat trick from Jerazeno Bell
In the men’s Open Division semifinals played earlier, Defence Force blanked Police 4-0 behind a second-half double from Mickel Pierre, while Vieira scored a hat trick to fire QPCC past Guyana’s Saints 4-2.
Magnolias spank Paragon for women’s title
Savannah De Freitas and Brianna Govia scored two goals each as Magnolias came from behind to whip last year’s winners Paragon 5-1 in the women’s Open final.
Zene Henry handed Paragon the lead as early as the first minute but Shaniah De Freitas drew Magnolias level three minutes later while her sister Savannah (eighth minutes), and Govia (tenth) also scored for a 3-1 lead at the halfway stage.
In the second half, Govia (19th), and Savannah (29th) completed their braces to make certain of victory and with it the title.
In the semifinals which were contested earlier on, Magnolias blanked host Ventures 3-0 while Paragon got the better of Georgetown Cricket Club of Guyana 2-1 on penalty-strokes shoot-out after a 1-1 draw in regulation-time.
Bell leads QPCC to veterans crown repeat
In the mixed veteran’s category, Jerazeno Bell scored in the tenth and 13th minutes to lead Queen’s Park Cricket Club (QPCC) to a successful title-defence, 3-2 over Police.
Robert France scored the third item for QPCC in the tenth minute for a 3-0 lead while Mickel Pierre and Wayne Legerton got second-half replies for Police in the 22nd and 30th minute respectively, but it was too little too late.
Earlier in the morning session, QPCC edged Fatima 2-1 in the semifinals with Bell scoring the decisive item while Police crushed Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) of Guyana 8-1 with Pierre netting a beaver trick.
