De­fence Force men and Mag­no­lias women were crowned new cham­pi­ons of the Open Di­vi­sions while Queen’s Park Crick­et Club vet­er­ans re­tained their ti­tle when the 19th Ven­tures Hock­ey Club In­ter­na­tion­al In­vi­ta­tion­al In­door Hock­ey Tour­na­ment end­ed at the Wood­brook Youth Fa­cil­i­ty, Hamil­ton-Hold­er Street, Wood­brook, on Sun­day.

Com­ing up against Queen’s Park Crick­et Club (QPCC) in the fi­nal, the Army/Coast-Guard com­bi­na­tion raced in­to a 2-0 lead thanks to Shaquille Daniel’s first-minute open­er, and Caleb Guis­sep­pie’s 13th-minute strike as they sig­nalled their in­ten­tions to keep hold of their crown.

How­ev­er, be­fore the half, Shawn Lee Quay pulled one back for the Parkites in the 14th to keep his team in the mix in the 30-minute clash.

Three min­utes in­to the sec­ond half, the in-form Jor­dan Vieira drew the Parkites lev­el at 2-2 af­ter which both teams failed to find the win­ner in reg­u­la­tion time, send­ing the con­test to the dread­ed penal­ty-strokes shoot-out where De­fence Force pre­vailed 4-2 to ex­act re­venge on their top-of-the-ta­ble Pool A clash on Sat­ur­day night which the Parkites won 4-2 on a hat trick from Jer­azeno Bell

In the men’s Open Di­vi­sion semi­fi­nals played ear­li­er, De­fence Force blanked Po­lice 4-0 be­hind a sec­ond-half dou­ble from Mick­el Pierre, while Vieira scored a hat trick to fire QPCC past Guyana’s Saints 4-2.

Mag­no­lias spank Paragon for women’s ti­tle

Sa­van­nah De Fre­itas and Bri­an­na Govia scored two goals each as Mag­no­lias came from be­hind to whip last year’s win­ners Paragon 5-1 in the women’s Open fi­nal.

Zene Hen­ry hand­ed Paragon the lead as ear­ly as the first minute but Sha­ni­ah De Fre­itas drew Mag­no­lias lev­el three min­utes lat­er while her sis­ter Sa­van­nah (eighth min­utes), and Govia (tenth) al­so scored for a 3-1 lead at the halfway stage.

In the sec­ond half, Govia (19th), and Sa­van­nah (29th) com­plet­ed their braces to make cer­tain of vic­to­ry and with it the ti­tle.

In the semi­fi­nals which were con­test­ed ear­li­er on, Mag­no­lias blanked host Ven­tures 3-0 while Paragon got the bet­ter of George­town Crick­et Club of Guyana 2-1 on penal­ty-strokes shoot-out af­ter a 1-1 draw in reg­u­la­tion-time.

Bell leads QPCC to vet­er­ans crown re­peat

In the mixed vet­er­an’s cat­e­go­ry, Jer­azeno Bell scored in the tenth and 13th min­utes to lead Queen’s Park Crick­et Club (QPCC) to a suc­cess­ful ti­tle-de­fence, 3-2 over Po­lice.

Robert France scored the third item for QPCC in the tenth minute for a 3-0 lead while Mick­el Pierre and Wayne Leg­erton got sec­ond-half replies for Po­lice in the 22nd and 30th minute re­spec­tive­ly, but it was too lit­tle too late.

Ear­li­er in the morn­ing ses­sion, QPCC edged Fa­ti­ma 2-1 in the semi­fi­nals with Bell scor­ing the de­ci­sive item while Po­lice crushed George­town Crick­et Club (GCC) of Guyana 8-1 with Pierre net­ting a beaver trick.
