Burnley Athletics Club’s Destiny Arnold emerged as the most outstanding athlete at the Maximising Athletic Potential (MAP) Juvenile Track and Field Championships at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, during the weekend of May 3-4.
Arnold secured four victories as she raced to the girls’ Under-13 100-metre and 200m sprints, leapt to the long jump crown and secured the Vortex (juvenile javelin) throw title. She topped the 100m field in 13.3 seconds (hand time) ahead of Saree Taylor (Mason Hall Police Youth) with 14.3 and Concorde’s Kerniah Prescod with 14.3.
In the 200m, Arnold crossed the line in 28.0 with Annaleez Mussio (Abilene Wildcats), 28.1 and Johanna Huggins (FAD), 28.6, taking the minor places on the podium.
Arnold prevailed in the long jump (4.56m) with Sofia Snaggs of Point Fortin (4.28) landing silver and Taylor (3.47), the bronze medal.
She completed her quadruple win, claiming the Vortex throw with a distance of 17.12m. Adrianne Williams Lendor of Toco TAFAC captured the runner-up spot (16.81).
Arnold’s four gold medal-haul led the way for her Burnley club, which topped the medal table with 14 titles, eight more than the next best team, Simplex (six). Her teammate Zamuel Woodruffe was a triple winner with another Burnley duo of Khari John and Jael Peters grabbing two gold medals each.
Woodruffe blazed his way to the top spot in the boys’ U-11 80m (11.5), 150m (22.4) dashes and long jump (4.00).
John took care of the boys’ U-13 100m (13.6) and 800m (2:36.9) and missed out on a third gold when he had to settle for third in 400m.
Peters out-sprinted her rivals to secure the girls’ U-15 100m (12.5) and 200m (25.9). Akilah Chinapoo (Simplex) and Kaley Wiltshire (Abilene Wildcats) were second and third, respectively, in both races.
Isaiah Teesdale was the top performer for the red and white Simplex youths when he was triumphant in the boys’ U-15 100m (11.3) and 200m (22.6) sprints. He came close to a trio of wins, but he was beaten into second place in the 400m.
Abilene Wildcats bagged four wins with Sanah Malchan (10.4) and Destiny Guevara (22.8) recording impressive wins in the girls’ U-11 80m and 150m, respectively.
Antoniya Taylor of Princes Town made her mark at the meet with double gold by girls U-9 60m (9.8) and 80m (13.0).
The next event on the local track and field calendar is the Republic Bank Relays at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, on Sunday (May 18).
