AS­JA Girls Col­lege (San Fer­nan­do) se­cured the au­to­mat­ic semi­fi­nal spot in the Girls Open Di­vi­sion of the T&T Sec­ondary Schools Vol­ley­ball League (SSVL) when they won Group A of their round-robin se­ries at the South­ern Re­gion­al In­door Sports Are­na in Pleas­antville on Fri­day (Jan­u­ary 30).

This vic­to­ry came af­ter AS­JA Girls won the clash of un­beat­en teams against St Joseph’s Con­vent (St Joseph) in three close­ly fought sets, 28-26, 23-25, 15-12, fol­low­ing their ear­li­er win against St George’s Col­lege in an­oth­er three-set bat­tle, 25-14, 21-25, 15-10, which con­clud­ed their day with four wins from as many match­es.

St Joseph’s Con­vent (St Joseph) had ear­li­er won by de­fault from San Fer­nan­do Cen­tral Sec­ondary, while Maple Leaf In­ter­na­tion­al crushed St George’s Col­lege 25-9, 25-2 in the oth­er match on the day.

When they be­gan play on Mon­day, Jan­u­ary 26, at the East­ern Re­gion­al In­door Sports Are­na, Tacarigua AS­JA Girls Col­lege de­feat­ed San Fer­nan­do Cen­tral Sec­ondary 25-17, 25-16 and Maple Leaf In­ter­na­tion­al School 25-6, 25-18, while St Joseph’s Con­vent (St Joseph) bat­tled past Maple Leaf In­ter­na­tion­al School 23-25, 25-22, 15-11 and St George’s Col­lege, 25-1, 25-17.

In the two oth­er match­es in Group A, St George’s Col­lege won by de­fault against the late-ar­riv­ing San Fer­nan­do Cen­tral while the lat­ter was at full strength for their 13-25, 26-24, 6-15 loss to Maple Leaf.

Last month, St Joseph’s Con­vent (Port-of-Spain) se­cured the lone au­to­mat­ic spot from Group B in the semi­fi­nals af­ter end­ing their three-team round-robin se­ries un­beat­en at Tacarigua with wins over Tu­na­puna Sec­ondary School 25-14, 25-7 and In­ter­na­tion­al School of Port-of-Spain (ISPS) 25-19, 25-23 to se­cure their spot in the na­tion­al semi­fi­nal card­ed for the Na­tion­al Cy­cling Cen­tre in Bal­main, Cou­va, on Tues­day, Feb­ru­ary 3, from 1 pm.

ISPS end­ed in sec­ond spot af­ter win­ning 25-10, 25-8 over Tu­na­puna Sec­ondary in the oth­er match in the group, with both teams ad­vanc­ing to the quar­ter­fi­nals, card­ed for Sun­day (Feb­ru­ary 1) at Aranguez North Sec­ondary.
