The pair of Makeda Bain and Lee-Anne Thornton advanced to the Women’s Doubles final of the Sunshine Snacks Tranquillity Open at the Tranquillity Tennis Courts on Victoria Avenue. They are set to face the mother-daughter duo of multiple-times national champion Shenelle Mohammed and Lilly Mohammed.
Both teams were similar in their margin of victory in Friday’s semifinal contests. Playing on court two, the Bain/Thornton combination swept aside the team of fourth-seed Joanna Brown and Madison Khan in straight sets. First, the Bain/Thornton team raced to a 6-2 triumph that placed them with one foot into the final. And in the second set, they wasted little time in confirming their place by defeating Brown and Khan 6-3.
In the other semifinal, Shenelle Mohammed used her experience to pull her equally talented daughter past the team of Sarah Claverie and Savitree Singh in the first set 6-1. Later, in the second set, there appeared to be little to no resistance from Claverie and Singh, allowing the Mohammeds to prevail by a similar 6-1 margin to book their spot for the title match.
Later, Bain made a push for a double title in the doubles when she teamed up with Vaughn Wilson to pull off an almost flawless 6-0, 6-2 victory over the husband-and-wife pair of Andrew and Lee-Anne Thornton in the semifinals of the Mixed Doubles on court 1.
On court two, second-seed Akiel Duke and Savitree Singh took three sets before getting the better of Askia Richards and third-seeded Farrah Chautilal in the other semifinals 5-7, 6-3, 10-8.
Meanwhile, action in the men’s and women’s singles serves off today, with Neil Lingo facing Adrian Jacob; Ross Hackshaw versus Jack Brown; Coby James up against Richard McLetchie; Jayden Mitchell coming up against Stefon Ramsingh; and Josiah Hills versus Andre Crawford. Defending men’s champion Vaughn Wilson will be on a bye in the first turn this morning.
Among the women’s singles, Charis Salina will take on Keyah Roberts; Laura Li Millard comes up against Sarah Claverie; Cyra Ramcharan will face her sister Suri Ramcharan; Madison Khan will face Naomi Mohammed, and Makeda Bain will have a date with Farrah Chautilal.
