USA-born T&T tennis player Dillon Beckles was stopped at the quarterfinal hurdle of the men's singles at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Sunday.
Facing off with second-seeded Juan Sebastian Gomez of Colombia, Beckles had his served broken seven times on the way to a 4-6 3-6 defeat in one hour and 36 minutes as he came up short in his bid to try and add to Teniel Campbell's bronze medal won in the women's road cycling time trial on Saturday, this country's first and only medal of the games to date.
The T&T player started his campaign with a 6-0, 6-0 trouncing of Khalil Burroughs of St Kitts & Nevis on Friday before he battled past El Salvador’s Cesar Cruz 7-6(3), 6-4 in a two-hour and 30-minute match in the round-of-16 on Saturday.
Richards Jr stay in golf medal hunt
At the Corales Golf Course, T&T’s Chris Richards Jr stayed in the hunt for a medal with a second round even par 72 to remain in the fifth spot at two-under-par 142 over 36 holes.
The 21-year-old birdied the par five fourth hole as well as the par five seventh hole, par four tenth hole, and the 14th and 15th par five and four holes, respectively, for a total of five birdies on the day.
However, he also found some difficulty on holes four, nine, 11, 12 and 16, where he carded bogeys to end the day with an even score of 72.
Guatemalan Jose Manuel Toledo Novales stayed top of the leaderboard after he carded a second-round three-under-par 69 for a two-day total of 11-under-par 133, while the trio of Manuel Alejandro Torres Salazar (Venezuela), Dominican Republic’s Juan Jose Guerra Sanoja and his compatriot Guillermo Ramon Pumarol Hernandez are tied for second at three-under-par 141.
This was after Salazar carded a second-round even par 72, the same as Guerra, while Hernandez carded a two-under-par 70.
Ruggermen to face Venezuela in semis
T&T men’s rugby team will do battle with neighbours Venezuela in one of two semifinals today, with Colombia to meet Bermuda in the other. This was after T&T edged past Dominican Republic 15-14 in their virtual second-place battle in their four-team Pool A round-robin final match yesterday.
T&T was first on the board through a try from Jonathan Taylor, with Ruairi O'Farrell missing the conversion, before Dominican Republic hit back with a try from David Hightower and a successful conversion from Fabian Fernandez to lead 5-7.
Justin Lopez then scored a second try of the opening half for Dominican Republic to lead 12-5, with Julio Tonnabel adding the conversion for a 14-5 advantage.
In the second half, T&T managed to step up their defensive effort and held their opponents scoreless, while at the other end, Isaiah Small scored a try to trim the deficit to 14-10, before Taylor scored his second try for a 15-14 lead, which T&T managed to hang on to until the final whistle.
On Saturday, T&T defeated Costa Rica 20-5 in their rugby sevens opener, before they fell to Pool A winners Colombia 5-17. The Colombians powered past the Dominican Republic 26-12 in their opener and ended with a 49-0 trouncing of Costa Rica.
In Pool B, Venezuela secured wins over Guatemala 40-7, Bermuda 19-0 and Barbados 29-5 for a 3-0 record with the Bermudans taking the runner-up spot by winning their next two matches, 21-12 over the Barbadians, and 21-7 against Guatemala.
Morrison, Miguel win beach volleyball opener
T&T’s Jahreef Miguel and Jerome Morrison overcame a first-set defeat to top Antigua and Barbuda’s Miguel Lugo and Raenor Sharpe 17-21, 21-17, 15-7 in their men’s Group D round-robin play curtain-raiser.
They will return to the court today against Cubans Damian Gomez and Eblis Verane, El Salvador’s Rafael Vargas and Gabriel Vargas on Tuesday, and Belize’s Ernest Broaster and Francis Hauze, a day later to end pool play.
The women’s beach volleyball duo of Malika Davidson and Apphia Glasgow suffered a second defeat in as many outings, in Group C of their four-team round-robin series. Following a loss against Guatemala’s Paola Alvarado and Naomi Monney, 7-21, 9-21 on Saturday, Davidson and Glasgow were humbled 5-21, 5-21 by Mexicans Abril Flores and Susana Torres.
Today, the T&T women will go against the Grenadian pair of Thornia Mitchell and Renish Stafford before they conclude pool play versus Hondurans Reizel Bruhier and Shanna Rivera on Wednesday.
T&T's Marc Marcano fought valiantly before going under to Colombian Nicolas Morales 10-21, 17-21, 16-21 in their men's badminton singles round-of-32 clash while Chequeda De Boulet fell to Venezuelan Maria Rojas at the same stage of the women's singles competition, 13-21, 16-21.
In the mixed doubles round-of-32, De Boulet and Marcano were ousted by Guatemalans Jonathan Solis and Eneida, 13-21, 23-21, 11-21.
Competing in the Archery men’s team compound quarterfinals, the T&T team of Tristan Buuron, Robert Gibson and Samir Ramjattan were beaten by Mexico's Sebastien Garcia, Rodrigo Gonzalez and Lot Mendez 223-232, while in the women's team compound quarterfinals, T&T's Alexi Jaggernauth, Tennille Plata and Ava-Marie Singh went under to Mexico's Andrea Beccera, Ana Hernandez and Dafne Quinteri, 220-237.
Albada still in the hunt
Surfer Aiden Albada kept his medal hopes alive when he won the men's shortboard repechage heat one with 9.54 points, beating Nicaraguan Oscar Guzman (8.37) and Barbadian Lewis St John (6.46) into the second and third positions, respectively.
Today, Albada will line up in the fourth and final second round heat against Puerto Rican Dwight Pastrana, Costa Rican Samuel Reidy and Colombian Romeo Chaves from 8 am.
On Saturday night, T&T women’s basketballers were outclassed in their Pool B opener against the host Dominican Republic 96-29 at Arena Banreservas.
For the host, who led 30-6, 51-12 and 71-18 at the end of the first three quarters, Loanna Tolentino had 14 points, while Nataly Santana got 13, and the pair of Alanna Monte De Oca and Leia Nunez, ten points each.
Kalimah Sookram had a team-high ten points to lead T&T while Carrisa Ramdial added seven, and Mya Raymond five in the lopsided defeat.
Overall, it was a dominant display by the host as they outrebounded T&T 58-41 while they also forced 37 turnovers to 13 and had 27 steals to T&T's six, as well as nine blocks to T&T's two.

In taekwondo, T&T’s Nicholas Knight advanced past Guatemala’s David Fuentes 2-0 in the men's kyorugui 58kg quarterfinals, winning rounds 18-4 and 23-8. In the semifinals though, Knight was eliminated 2-0 by Mexico’s Zaid Perez, falling 18-12 and 14-6.
