Cyclist Kwesi Browne did not qualify for the match sprint yesterday morning, the T&T quickie produced a time of 10.012 in the flying 200 metres of the Tissot UCI Track World Championships in Saint-Quentin-En-Yvelines.

Browne needed to be among the top 28 riders to seal a place in the round of 16, but he finished +0.788 time slower than the fastest rider on the day Harrie Lavreysen of the Netherlands. With that time, Browne sealed the 34th spot out of a field of 45 riders.

Lavreysen's 9.224 earned him an immediate place into the next round as the fastest qualifier. The Dutchman, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, having won the sprint and team sprint event at the 2020 Summer Olympics, was followed closely behind by the Australian pair of Matthew Richardson and Matthew Glaetzer, both posting times of 9.381 and 9.405 to secure their entry into the round of 16.

Browne, only on Friday, failed to advance to the second round of the keirin event, despite competing a second time in the repechage.

Browen, who made a name for himself at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan just could not find the form that saw him win the bronze medal in the keirin at the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games and also at the 2016 Pan American Track Cycling Championships.

His countryman Nicholas Paul holds the record for the fastest time in the flying 200 metres sprints at 9.100 which was set at the Elite Pan American Track Cycling Championships in Coachabamba, Bolivia in 2019. The previous record of 9.347 seconds by France's Francois Pervis had stood since 2013.

However, an injured collarbone as well as other minor injuries last week prevented Paul from competing at the championships.

It was Browne's last ride at the World Championships but it would not be the last chance for T&T at medalling at the event as endurance rider Akil Campbell is expected to spring into action today in the Elimination Race.

Like Browne, Campbell struggled in his early race of the event, finishing 20th in the Scratch Race on Thursday.
