Presentation College (Chaguanas) and Chaguanas South Secondary took the third-place prizes in the East Zone of the Open Boys and Open Girls divisions, respectively, in the Secondary Schools Volleyball League on Thursday.
After the Central schools were made to contest the East Zone due to low participation numbers, they made their presence felt. Presentation, famously known for its exploits in cricket and football, shut out El Dorado West Secondary 2-0 for the Open Boys third-place crown at the National Cycling Centre in Balmain, Couva.
In the first set, the Presentation lads battled to a 25-17 victory to take a 1-0 advantage, before comfortably brushing aside their counterparts 25-10 in the second set to secure the win.
In the Girls Open equivalent, Chaguanas South turned back Tunapuna Secondary in straight sets, 25-16, 25-22, to claim the bronze medals.
Meanwhile, the Open finals will be contested tomorrow at Aranguez Secondary. The boys’ match-up will feature Trinity College East taking on San Juan North Secondary.
Both schools had contrasting journeys to the final. San Juan came from a set down against Presentation in the first semifinal to power its way to a berth in the final, 14-25, 25-19, 15-6.
In the other semifinal, Trinity East raced ahead 25-16 against El Dorado West, only for the latter to tie the match by taking the second set 25-23. However, the Arouca-based school had the last laugh, brushing aside its opponents 15-4 in the deciding set.
There were also third-place finishes for Bishop Anstey High School in the Girls U-17 division and St Augustine Girls High School (SAGHS) in the Girls U-15 category.
SAGHS showed its mettle by defeating St George’s College 25-13, 25-22 in the U-15 division. In the U-17 category, there was no stopping Bishop Anstey, which claimed third place with a 25-22, 27-25 triumph over Tunapuna Secondary.
