Kale Dalla Costa continued to fly the red, white and black flag high when he battled his way through to the quarterfinals of the Boys Under-18 Division Singles in the Trinity Cup International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Tournament at the National Racquet Centre, Orange Grove Road, Tacarigua, Tuesday.
The first junior men’s player to be seeded number one for an ITF Junior Tournament, Dalla Costa, a semifinalist in the Sunshine Snacks Tranquility Tennis Open, recently had to dig deep to secure a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 win over China's Zicong Wang and will next face Brazilian Bernardo Tedesco, ranked third who dumped Barbadian Aidan Clarke in their round-of-16 clash 6-4, 6-0.
However, in the Girls Under-18 Singles draw, T&T’s Em-Myriam Campbell-Smith, ranked sixth was beaten in her tournament opener 6-0, 6-2 by Canada's Alyssa Beltei after being handed an opening round bye on Monday.
Due to persistent rain at the venue, matches were forced to be taken to the indoor courts, where only three matches could be contested at any time, delaying the day's activities somewhat with action continuing up to press time last night.
Wednesday, matches resume from 9 am with boys’ and girls’ quarterfinals as well as doubles quarterfinals.
