Mr Solo Too led a list of four boats and crews to have received double awards on Saturday when the Powerboat Association held its Awards Function for 2025 at Island Dare, Number 1 Woodbrook Place, Port-of-Spain.
The awards given out for both the National Championship Series, which featured the performances of the boats at the five regattas, and the International Great Race in August saw Mr Solo’s crew of Darin Marshall, Joseph Charles, and Hayden Charles join the crews of Kraken, Extreme Measures, and Track Heatwave on the podium for winning their respective classes.
Mr Solo rode all alone in the 130mph A-Class and expectedly clinched the win for the National Championships and the Great Race. However, Kraken, the 60mph class, was forced to fend off John Wick at the national championships and Shortboss at this year’s great race. Kraken was also crowned the overall national champion boat, for which they were presented with two trophies and a hamper, while 80mph campaigner Pandemic/Outlaw got the Lennox Tang Yuk Championships title of two trophies and a cash prize.
President Stefan Scott-Lewis said the Lennox Tang Yuk Challenge Trophy is more than an award but one that is a tribute to a man whose fingerprints are all over the history, heart, and spirit of powerboat racing in T&T. “Lenox was the finish boat, the steady hand, the voice on the radio, the man who knew every racer by name—and who could probably tell you what part of the course you were on just by listening to your engine over VHF. He was reliability, passion, and precision wrapped into one person,” Scott-Lewis said.
Multiple times 70 mph Class winner Extreme Measures proved their worth yet again, disposing of Blue Ice for the top prize among the regatta series, but in August, they got the better of Ratchet and Ketch to reign supreme in their class.
This was also the same for Track Heatwave in the 80mph class; the crew of Morgan Hancock and John Michael Sabga powered their way to victories in both the regatta series for the year, as well as when the boats squared off at the great race. Meanwhile, Arrow got the better of S KAPADE and Pandemic for the right to mount the podium for the award in the Spec Class; however, ASALT held them off in August.
The association, led by Stefan Scott-Lewis, also recognised people who assisted with the preparation of the great race and other events, namely Sheldon Williams, Chris Skinner, Colin Mowser, Paul Foster, and Luke Frankland.
