Canada-based Aidan Elias scored in the final quarter to earn the Glen “Fido” Francis-coached T&T Junior (Under-21) “Calypso Stickmen” a 1-1 draw with host Barbados in their round-robin opener of the Junior Pan Am Challenge at the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex Hockey Centre in Wildey, Bridgetown, Barbados, Sunday.
The Barbadians took a first-quarter lead in the 60-minute contest when captain Kanye Wharton scored in the second minute and that lead lasted until Elias salvaged a point for T&T with his equaliser in the 12 minutes left in the encounter as both teams ended with a share of the points at the end of their tournament openers.
Brazil sits top of the six-team group after blasting Guatemala 9-0 for a second win from as many matches while Guyana is second with three points from two matches.
Today, the T&T men face Guyana from 2 pm before meeting Guatemala on Wednesday from 8 am; Venezuela on Thursday from noon, and Brazil on Saturday from 8 am. Barbados and Venezuela meet from 4 pm in the other match today.
