Aidan Elias ...scored equaliser for T&T

Cana­da-based Aidan Elias scored in the fi­nal quar­ter to earn the Glen “Fi­do” Fran­cis-coached T&T Ju­nior (Un­der-21) “Ca­lyp­so Stick­men” a 1-1 draw with host Bar­ba­dos in their round-robin open­er of the Ju­nior Pan Am Chal­lenge at the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Com­plex Hock­ey Cen­tre in Wildey, Bridgetown, Bar­ba­dos, Sunday.

The Bar­ba­di­ans took a first-quar­ter lead in the 60-minute con­test when cap­tain Kanye Whar­ton scored in the sec­ond minute and that lead last­ed un­til Elias sal­vaged a point for T&T with his equalis­er in the 12 min­utes left in the en­counter as both teams end­ed with a share of the points at the end of their tour­na­ment open­ers.

Brazil sits top of the six-team group af­ter blast­ing Guatemala 9-0 for a sec­ond win from as many match­es while Guyana is sec­ond with three points from two match­es.

To­day, the T&T men face Guyana from 2 pm be­fore meet­ing Guatemala on Wednes­day from 8 am; Venezuela on Thurs­day from noon, and Brazil on Sat­ur­day from 8 am. Bar­ba­dos and Venezuela meet from 4 pm in the oth­er match to­day.

Puer­to Ri­co slams Ca­lyp­so Stick­women 13-0

T&T’s Un­der-21 women’s hock­ey was hand­ed a sec­ond straight drub­bing 13-0 against Puer­to Ri­co yes­ter­day to fol­low up on an 8-0 ham­mer­ing at the hands of Mex­i­co in their open­ing match on Sat­ur­day.

Lead­ing the way for the Puer­to Ri­cans was the duo of An­na Kosek and Ele­na Schu­mach­er with three goals each while Mar­garet Reed added a pair with one each com­ing off the stick of the quin­tet of Terese Reed, Bel­yse Lan­dis, Geor­gia Rot­ting­haus, Sophia Hasen­pat and Jalia Coop­er.

In the oth­er women’s match­es yes­ter­day, Mex­i­co blanked Guyana 6-0 and Bar­ba­dos de­feat­ed Guatemala, 6-0.

To­day, the Kristin Thomp­son-coached T&T women will have a rest day be­fore they re­sume play on Tues­day against Bar­ba­dos from 4 pm fol­lowed by match­es against Guatemala on Wednes­day, March 12 from 10 am, and Guyana on Fri­day, March 14 from noon.

At the end of both cat­e­gories, the top two teams will con­test the gold medal match along with se­cur­ing the two spots avail­able to the 2025 Ju­nior Pan Amer­i­can Games in Paraguay this Au­gust while third and fourth-placed round-robin fin­ish­ers will com­pete for the bronze.
