T&T's Geraldine George copped gold in the women's 50-54 javelin throw on the final day of the 2025 World Masters (Over 35) Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Alachua County Sports Centre, Gainesville, Florida USA on Sunday (March 30).
George took the top spot with a distance of 35.41 metres in the fifth round to win this country's second gold medal at the meet after Gwendolyn Smith secured the women's 60-64 javelin crown on March 24.
The double gold success by George and Smith was their third at the global meet following their victories at the 2010 and 2012 World Indoors Masters in Kamloops, Canada and Jyvaskyla, Finland, respectively.
Former T&T two-time Olympian Marsha Mark-Baird finished second behind George in Florida with 35.27m. Mark-Baird took the lead after the first round with her best effort of 35.27m while George fouled her opening throw.
George, a former Carifta champion, moved up into the runner-up spot after registering a 30.20m in the second round. After fouling the third throw, the Point Fortin athlete improved to 32.29m in the fourth round but remained in second spot. However, she moved to the top of the field with 35.41m. She closed off the competition with 30.99m in the sixth and final round. Brazilian Stella Maris Carpinelli Caldeira ended with the bronze medal (31.15m). Mark-Baird is a former multiple World Masters champion. She now competes for the USA.
George's golden medal performance came after she missed out on winning a medal in the three events she competed in earlier in the championships. She was sixth in the discus (34.27m) and shot put (12.50m) and 12th in the weight throw (11.06m) finals.
Smith was also in action on the final day. She ended in 12th spot in the women's 60-64 discus (18.96m) with another T&T thrower Noelyn Toby-Davis in eighth (21.33m). Smith also copped silver in the women's 60-64 shot put.
George, Smith and Toby-Davis were members of T&T's five-member team which competed in Florida. Sprinters Raymond Smith and Philbert Ryce were the others.
The T&T masters contingent finished with three medals (2 gold, 1 silver) to finish 29th on the medal table. The USA was the top country with 557 medals (135, 190, 182) ahead of Great Britain and Northern Ireland with 93 (42, 25, 26) and Germany with 70 (29, 23, 18).
The Bahamas won two medals (1, 0, 1). Barbados 1 (1, 0, 0), and Bermuda 1 (0, 1, 0), secured one medal each.
