T&T sprinters Michelle-Lee Ahye added another medal to her cabinet yesterday, by sprinting to the gold medal in the Great North City Games in Newcastle, England.
Competing in the unconventional 150 metre Women's Sprint event, Lee Ahye, sprinted to 16.49 seconds, under winds of 2.6 m/s for the victory ahead of hometown favourite Daryll Neita (Great Britain) in 16.80 seconds. The third position was sewn up by another Great Britain sprinter Jodie Williams, crossing the finish line in 16.97 seconds.
Laura De Witte, the lone Netherlands runner in the event, was fourth in a relatively slow time of 17.50 seconds. After the race, Lee Ahye, who only two months ago secured a bronze medal in the 100-metre dash at the IAAF Diamond League in Stockholm, Sweden, was set to take a well deserved 4-5 week break for the season.
She said after the race that while she was happy for the win, it was not what she had expected.
She told reporters her performance was much slower than she wanted to go, especially coming to the end of the season in a 150-metre event. She said however that she intends to use the break to improve in the coming months.
Following her third-place 11.11 seconds finish in June, in a race that included compatriot Khalifa St Fort, Lee Ahye took to the twitter and said the pieces were slowly falling into places, assuring her fans that she will continue to work hard and be patient, believing one day it will all come together.
Meanwhile, the 24-year-old St Fort clocked 11.35 seconds in only her second Diamond League event for her seventh-place finish.
