It was an exciting end to a dominant performance by Grand Masters, which saw them take top place in the finals of the 8-Ball Pool League hosted by the Pyramid Sports Bar in Gasparillo on Sunday (February 8).
The scoresheet reflected the resiliency of Grand Masters as their opening player suffered a defeat to the player from Sikarioz Billiards Club. This initial setback only seemed to bolster the efforts of the team, and they produced a truly masterful performance to win the next three games consecutively and take victory in the ‘best-out-of-five’ finals.
Elated Grand Masters captain, Ganesh Boodram, praised the team effort behind the victory, “Our entire team played consistently throughout this league and really pulled through in the tough matches. The quality of the teams in this tournament was high, and we had to be on our A-game to make it to the finals. I am proud of our accomplishment and look forward to this momentum taking us to victory in future tournaments.”
Started in October 2025, the Pyramid 8-Ball Pool League saw ten teams from across the country battle in a round robin format, which then transitioned into a page playoff format across two groupings comprising of the first to fourth and the fifth to eighth placed teams.
President of Billiards Sports Organisation of T&T (BSOTT), Reagan Low Chew Tung, and captain of the third-placed Rivalz team, gave recognition to the quality of the tournament.
He noted, “I would like to thank the management of Pyramid Sports Bar for hosting this competition, as this is one of the best venues for pool in the country. Testimony to this is the fact that BSOTT recently hosted the Master’s Cup here, which saw the top 16 players from across the country battle to be crowned the best. The quality of the tables, the ambience, and the hospitality extended make this a must-visit venue for any fan of pool.”
“I also see this as a challenge for other venues to follow pattern and play their part in investing in the development of this sport. Further to this, we need the corporate sector to get on board and assist the prodigious billiards talent in Trinidad and Tobago to make it to the international stage – thereby creating one more platform for our nation to shine. BSOTT stands ready and willing to partner with anyone that wants to play a part in making this a reality,” Low Chew Tung added.
Owner of Pyramid and national A-ranked player, Shakar Beephan, was elated with the response of the pool community in terms of entering the tournament and sustaining a high quality of play throughout.
Beephan thanked the teams, as well as supporters and his staff, for making the tournament a successful one. Beephan made special mention of the sponsorship of Roti Master of Freeport, which added to the success of the competition. He also noted that the next competition would be a 10-Ball event, which would be expanded to include the elite national players.
Bringing a spectacular end to the finals was the prize-giving function, which saw the distribution of $30,000 in cash and trophies to the top six teams.
Taking a central role was corporate sponsor and owner of Roti Master, Ashraff Hosein: “I have always loved this game, and I felt that it was my duty to lend my support to this top-class competition. This sport is international recognised, and this tournament showed that the game had changed into a structured and professional competitive sport. It was especially great to see so many young players, and we all need to support them and help them reach the international stage.”
