Freshmen Justin Guy of South Plains College and New Mexico Junior College (JC) duo Ayla Stanisclaus and Tyrell Edwards were runner-ups in their respective events at the Texas Tech University's Corky/Crofoot Shootout at the Terry & Linda Fuller Track and Field Complex in Lubbock, Texas in the United States on the weekend.
Guy shined in the men's 110 metres hurdles, placing second with a windy 13.87 seconds (2.9) in the final, following Texas Tech junior Jamal Maliek (13.74) to the line.
His schoolmate Camille Lewis missed out on a top-three finish in the women's 400m hurdles. The South Plains freshman placed fourth with 1:03.13 but later anchored the 4x400m relay team to second place with 3:42.13.
Both Guy and Lewis were competing in their final tune-up ahead of the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships to be held at the Texan Track and Field Complex from May 11-13 in Levelland.
"Camille Lewis is going to make some noise at the national meet," said South Plains head coach Erik Vance of the T&T athlete on the svhool's website. "She was an 800 runner coming in and had never hurdled before, and now she is one of the top 400 hurdlers in junior college."
Stanisclaus represented New Mexico JC well as she has done all season, sprinting to second in the women's 100m with a wind-assisted 11.27 (2.1). She also helped her team to the second spot in the 4x100m relay with a 45.41-timing.
Edwards' success came in the men's version of the dash, going over the line in a time of 10.38 (1.1) in section one of four in the timed finals and was the lone T&T athlete of the four New Mexico JC freshmen that competed in the 100m event, placing among the top three finishers.
The others raced in section two which saw Timothy Fredericks cross second with 10.65 (3.0) to place sixth overall, Aaron Brewster finished 10th after placing fifth (10.73) and Onil Mitchell trailed in sixth spot (10.96), to finish in 16th place overall.
Both Fredericks and Brewster faced the starter in the 200m in section two of four but neither had success. Fredericks just missed out on the top three spots, crossing second with 21.85 (1.5) to be fourth overall while Brewster, unfortunately, false-started.
T&T had two athletes feature at the National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA) Region VI Championships at the Mark A Phillips Track and Field Complex at Cowley College in Arkansas City. However, neither Butler Community College freshmen Jerod Elcock or Judah Taylor picked up any medals.
Elcock challenged the sprint events but was unsuccessful, placing 13th (third in heat one) with 10.59 (0.2) in the men's 100m and 11th (second on heat one) in the 200m with 21.39 (0.3), failing to advance out of the preliminary rounds in either event.
Taylor raced in the fastest of the five heats, placing eighth in the final heat and overall in a time of 48.39. He later led off the Butler CC quartet in the 4x400 relay and his team placed fourth in 3:17.21 in the Arkansas meet.
