Hills, Khan, Harrigan seal Junior Davis Cup spots

Josi­ah Hills, Christo­pher Khan and Oliv­er Har­ri­g­an se­cured the top three spots in the Ju­nior Davis Cup tri­als host­ed by the Ten­nis As­so­ci­a­tion of T&T to earn their spots on the na­tion­al team for the World Ju­nior Tour­na­ment at the Na­tion­al Rac­quet Cen­tre in Tacarigua Sun­day.

With a chance to end the six-team round-robin se­ries with a per­fect 5-0 record, the third-ranked Khan was out­last­ed by top-seed­ed Hills 6-3, 3-6, 3-6 as both play­ers end­ed with a 4-1 record while in the clash to de­ter­mine the third spot, Har­ri­g­an, ranked sixth, downed sec­ond seed Jay­sean Wells7-5, 4-6, 6-1 to end with a 3-2 record while the lat­ter end­ed 2-3 and will be the team's re­serve play­er.

In the oth­er match in the af­ter­noon ses­sion, No­vak Mal­com de­feat­ed Jack Brown 6-7 (7), 6-4, 4-2, re­tired for his first win while the for­mer end­ed with a sim­i­lar 1-4 record.

In yes­ter­day's morn­ing ses­sion match­es, Khan all but ce­ment­ed his spot on the team when he de­feat­ed Wells 6-4, 6-2 to im­prove to 4-0, while fifth-ranked Brown stunned Hills 7-6, 0-6, 6-4 and Har­ri­g­an bat­tled past Mal­colm 7-5, 1-6, 6-3.

On Sat­ur­day, Hills, the na­tion­al Un­der-12 cham­pi­on, brushed aside Mal­com 6-2, 7-5 while sec­ond-ranked Wells de­feat­ed fifth-seed­ed Jack Brown 6-4, 6-2, and num­ber three play­er Khan out­classed Har­ri­g­an, ranked sixth, 6-0, 6-4.

In the evening ses­sion, Hills won the clash of the top two seeds with Wells 6-0, 6-2 to move his record to 3-0, while his op­po­nent dropped to 2-1 with Khan al­so win­ning his third match, 6-4, 6-2 against Mal­colm, and Har­ri­g­an, 6-2, 6-4 over Brown for his first win.

A day ear­li­er, Hills de­feat­ed sixth-ranked Har­ri­g­an 6-2, 7-5 while Wells whipped Mal­colm 6-2, 6-4 and Khan topped Brown 7-6(4), 6-1.

Ram­cha­ran, Sylvester se­cure Ju­nior Bil­lie Jean King Cup picks

In the Ju­nior Bil­lie Jean King Cup Girls' qual­i­fiers, the third-ranked Cyra Ram­cha­ran end­ed with a per­fect 4-0 mark cour­tesy of her 6-4, 6-0 beat­ing of fourth seed An­neliese Orr in the morn­ing ses­sion.

The win for Ram­cha­ran sealed the top spot and her se­lec­tion to the na­tion­al team as a top-two fin­ish while top-ranked Cher­dine Sylvester pow­ered past sec­ond seed Karis­sa Mo­hammed 6-0, 6-2 to keep her hopes alive as well.

In the evening ses­sion, Sylvester pow­ered past Suri Ram­cha­ran 6-2, 6-1 in a clash of play­ers with 2-1 records to grab the sec­ond spot as well as the oth­er re­main­ing na­tion­al team pick with Mo­hammed beat­ing Orr 7-5, 6-3 for her first win.

On Sat­ur­day, Cyra Ram­cha­ran up­staged Mo­hammed 6-2, 6-3 and Suri Ram­cha­ran bat­tled past fourth-ranked Orr 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the first ses­sion while in the af­ter­noon, Cyra Ram­cha­ran de­feat­ed Sylvester 6-3, 6-1 and Suri Ram­cha­ran won 6-1, 7-6(3) over Mo­hammed.

When the qual­i­fiers served off on Fri­day, Sylvester swept past Orr 6-1, 6-2 and Cyra Ram­cha­ran got past her sis­ter Suri Ram­cha­ran 6-3, 7-5.

Make­da Bain was named to the girls' team au­to­mat­i­cal­ly and last week was se­lect­ed to the Cen­tral Amer­i­ca and the Caribbean Ten­nis Con­fed­er­a­tion (COTECC) Tour­ing team for a se­ries of tour­na­ments in South Amer­i­ca, and was ex­cused from the tri­als.
