Josiah Hills, Christopher Khan and Oliver Harrigan secured the top three spots in the Junior Davis Cup trials hosted by the Tennis Association of T&T to earn their spots on the national team for the World Junior Tournament at the National Racquet Centre in Tacarigua Sunday.
With a chance to end the six-team round-robin series with a perfect 5-0 record, the third-ranked Khan was outlasted by top-seeded Hills 6-3, 3-6, 3-6 as both players ended with a 4-1 record while in the clash to determine the third spot, Harrigan, ranked sixth, downed second seed Jaysean Wells7-5, 4-6, 6-1 to end with a 3-2 record while the latter ended 2-3 and will be the team's reserve player.
In the other match in the afternoon session, Novak Malcom defeated Jack Brown 6-7 (7), 6-4, 4-2, retired for his first win while the former ended with a similar 1-4 record.
In yesterday's morning session matches, Khan all but cemented his spot on the team when he defeated Wells 6-4, 6-2 to improve to 4-0, while fifth-ranked Brown stunned Hills 7-6, 0-6, 6-4 and Harrigan battled past Malcolm 7-5, 1-6, 6-3.
On Saturday, Hills, the national Under-12 champion, brushed aside Malcom 6-2, 7-5 while second-ranked Wells defeated fifth-seeded Jack Brown 6-4, 6-2, and number three player Khan outclassed Harrigan, ranked sixth, 6-0, 6-4.
In the evening session, Hills won the clash of the top two seeds with Wells 6-0, 6-2 to move his record to 3-0, while his opponent dropped to 2-1 with Khan also winning his third match, 6-4, 6-2 against Malcolm, and Harrigan, 6-2, 6-4 over Brown for his first win.
A day earlier, Hills defeated sixth-ranked Harrigan 6-2, 7-5 while Wells whipped Malcolm 6-2, 6-4 and Khan topped Brown 7-6(4), 6-1.
Ramcharan, Sylvester secure Junior Billie Jean King Cup picks
In the Junior Billie Jean King Cup Girls' qualifiers, the third-ranked Cyra Ramcharan ended with a perfect 4-0 mark courtesy of her 6-4, 6-0 beating of fourth seed Anneliese Orr in the morning session.
The win for Ramcharan sealed the top spot and her selection to the national team as a top-two finish while top-ranked Cherdine Sylvester powered past second seed Karissa Mohammed 6-0, 6-2 to keep her hopes alive as well.
In the evening session, Sylvester powered past Suri Ramcharan 6-2, 6-1 in a clash of players with 2-1 records to grab the second spot as well as the other remaining national team pick with Mohammed beating Orr 7-5, 6-3 for her first win.
On Saturday, Cyra Ramcharan upstaged Mohammed 6-2, 6-3 and Suri Ramcharan battled past fourth-ranked Orr 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the first session while in the afternoon, Cyra Ramcharan defeated Sylvester 6-3, 6-1 and Suri Ramcharan won 6-1, 7-6(3) over Mohammed.
When the qualifiers served off on Friday, Sylvester swept past Orr 6-1, 6-2 and Cyra Ramcharan got past her sister Suri Ramcharan 6-3, 7-5.
Makeda Bain was named to the girls' team automatically and last week was selected to the Central America and the Caribbean Tennis Confederation (COTECC) Touring team for a series of tournaments in South America, and was excused from the trials.
