Liam Lowell did not disappoint on day two of the National Cycling Championships on Friday at the National Cycling Centre (NCC) in Balmain, Couva.
Following a successful Easter International Cycling Grand Prix, the Madonna Wheelers rider earned the title of national champion in the points race for Tinymites riders when he drove to the finish line ahead of competitive field to earn the maximum of 35 points.
Lowell was all alone on the wooden tracks of the NCC despite being pursued by an equally talented Jahziel Jacob who eventually secured the runner-up spot for Rigtech Sonics with Josiah Prince, another Sonics rider, taking the bronze medal in third.
Later, the riders renewed their rivalry in the keirin but Lowell for a second time proved to be a cut above the rest. As the derney left the track, Lowell, who took the front position behind the bike early, pulled away from the field as he opened up a near 100 metres gap which he took to the finish line for the win.
Jeduthen Henry raced home for the silver medal while Jacob, who was second in the points race, had to settle for third. Meanwhile, Trishton Jaichan was crowned the national champion in the juvenile division for Team PSL. His first-place finish earned him an overwhelming 28 points, which was two more than second-place Jaquan Elbourne of Team JLD, as Hummingbird International’s Elijah James crossed the line in the third position for 16 points.
