A hat-trick from David Maloney for Central Soccer World ensured his team a 4-3 victory over central neighbours Central FC, as well as his team close off the season at sixth position on 22 points in the Ascension Football League on Sunday at the St James Barracks.
The match was the last to be played in the first major football tournament after two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Maloney’s heroics may have come just a tad bit too late. Maloney opened the scoring in the 14th minute, giving his team a 1-0 advantage, but their celebrations lasted just two minutes before Shem Clauzel found the equalizer in the 17th.
Both teams endured a period of back and fro as they tried to break each other’s defences. However, the Central FC resistance was broken when Maloney again found the net in the 32nd. And Keilon Burnett made it 3-1 before the teams went to the half-time interval.
After the break Central FC Levelled knotted up the scores with two goals in quick succession, coming from Miguel Williams in the 60th and the 65th minutes.
It gave the Ross Russell-coached team some hopes of finishing off the season on a winning note but Maloney spoiled their plans. The prolific Central Soccer World striker then delivered a dagger into the hearts of the Central FC players and staff with the winning goal in the 73rd minute.
Both teams will now attempt to register for the coming New Elite Football League (NEFL) being offered by the T&T Football Association/Normalisation Committee which is scheduled to begin next month.
The Ascension was comfortably won by an outstanding Terminix La Horquetta Rangers which played unbeaten all season and finished with 48 points. Dethroned champs Defence Force (41 points) later defeated Police 2-1 for the second, while the Lawmen secured third on 37 points.
