England-based Teague Marcano registered his fourth beaver-trick of the tournament to lead T&T senior men’s hockey team to an emphatic 11-0 mauling of winless Guatemala in their penultimate round-robin match of the four-team Men’s Pan American Challenge Wednesday.
Playing in the first match of a double-header at the Andres Avelino Caceres Sports Complex in Lima, Peru, co-captain Jordan Vieira opened the ‘Calypso Stickmen’ account in the seventh minute, followed by items from Nicholas Whiteman in the 12th and Dylan Francis in the 13th for a 3-0 cushion at the end of the first-minute quarter.
Marcano then joined in on the scoring in the second period with his first of the contest in the 17th with his 17th goal of the tournament before adding two more items in the 18th and the 29th from the penalty-stroke to complete a second quarter hat-trick and extend T&T’s lead to 6-0.
The third period saw T&T ease up their offensive onslaught with only Shaquille Daniel adding his name to the score sheet in the 44th before the flurry of goals resumed in the final period with Daniel getting his second of the match, the team’s eighth, in the 48th before Marcano grabbed his fourth in the 51st, while Vieira chipped in with his second in the 55th, and Daniel the final item in the 57th to complete his hat-trick.
With the win, T&T, who had previously defeated Peru (2-0 and 6-1), Guatemala (9-0), and Paraguay (13-0), improved to a maximum of 15 points from five matches ahead of their final round-robin clash with Paraguay on Friday, while Peru is second with nine points and also cemented its spot in the final after beating Paraguay 2-0 in a pivotal match yesterday.
The winners of Saturday’s final between T&T and Peru will earn the lone qualification spot to the Pan American Cup in Montevideo, Uruguay, in September 2025.
