"What is for you, is for you."

These were the words of train­er Har­ri­ram Gob­in af­ter colt Mas­ter of War stormed home in the fea­ture Ari­ma Race Club's NL­CB Gold Cup at San­ta Rosa Park, Ari­ma, on Thurs­day.

The race opened up af­ter the Gob­in trained pre-race favourite and Stew­ard's Cup run­ner-up Nu­clear Pow­er was scratched from the event on Christ­mas Day, throw­ing a damper on the pres­ti­gious event.

How­ev­er, sec­ond-string sta­ble­mate Mas­ter of War, with Wilmer Galviz aboard, proved good enough to win the event over 2,000 me­tres on the main track im­pres­sive­ly by 5 1/4 lengths from the new favourite Apoc­a­lypse at odds of 9-2 and with it the $125,070 first prize cheque.

Last year, Galviz got the Shiv­am Ma­haraj owned fil­ly Nu­clear Pow­er home in a tight fin­ish from Val­or­ous and Whis­per Light but yes­ter­day there was no such prob­lem.

When the starter sent the 11-horse field on their way, the Glenn Mendez-trained Whis­per Light was first to show from Mas­ter of War and Gen­er­al JN, fol­lowed by Thisones­for­ron, Wots To Re­port, Apoc­a­lypse, Cape Canaver­al, Mak­ing Head­lines and Rav­ish­ing. Streak­ing Far was next and Big­man In Town trailed the field.

Go­ing down the back-stretch, Whis­per Light still held sway as Gen­er­al JN moved in­to sec­ond just ahead of Mas­ter of War with Thisones­for­ron still keep­ing pace.

At the far turn, Gen­er­al JN took the lead but on­ly on suf­fer­ance as Galviz asked the Shiv­am Ma­haraj owned four-year-old Mas­ter of War to take clos­er or­der af­ter Whis­per Light hoist­ed the white flag and Thisones­for­ron came un­der pres­sure as Apoc­a­lypse be­gan his run at the lead­ers.

With 500 me­tres left, how­ev­er, Galviz gave Mas­ter of War the of­fice and he sprint­ed clear of his ri­vals to come in­to the straight with a three-length lead from Apoc­a­lypse, who was now be­ing de­liv­ered with his run by Ri­co Her­nan­dez.

How­ev­er, the fur­ther they went the more Galviz and Mas­ter of War pressed the ad­van­tage and they even­tu­al­ly pulled clear for an im­pres­sive suc­cess. Apoc­a­lypse stayed on for sec­ond ahead of Gen­er­al JN, Cape Canaver­al and Mak­ing Head­lines.

The win­ner's time was a good 2:06.00.

The win gave Galviz his fifth win in the event, mak­ing him the win­ningest jock­ey in its his­to­ry. Train­er Gob­in and own­er Ma­haraj al­so cel­e­brat­ed their con­sec­u­tive suc­cess in the event.

In the co-fea­ture, St Ann's Stakes, the John O'Brien-trained Bel­la Ri­va showed she was the best ju­ve­nile in train­ing by can­ter­ing home in the Cash Pot St Ann's Stakes over 1,350 me­tres.

Bri­an Boodram­s­ing had pre­cious lit­tle to do as she broke alert­ly and was al­ways front-ranked be­fore tak­ing con­trol at the far turn and fair­ly sprint­ing clear from the cor­ner for a de­ci­sive 4 1/2 length suc­cess in the time of 1:24.1.

How­ev­er, in the St James Stakes over 1,350 me­tres, Harold Chadee, who was the day's lead­ing train­er af­ter sad­dling three win­ners, led in the win­ner, the third, fourth and fifth past the post in the Grade Two event.

From the off, the Chadee trio of Nu­clear Fire, Amer­i­can Trav­eller and favourite Air­force Won held sway, rac­ing as one go­ing up the back-stretch. At the far turn, Nu­clear Pow­er and Air­force Won went on as Amer­i­can Trav­eller came un­der pres­sure when the John O'Brien-trained Wise Guy made his move to the lead­ers with Goldon D'or still trail­ing the field af­ter blow­ing the start. As the hors­es swung for home, cham­pi­on jock­ey Ricky Jadoo called on Air­force Won and the colt Blue Pep­si Lodge/Lead Vale sprint­ed away from the field. Wise Guy stayed on to be clos­est some 3 3/4 length be­hind the win­ner and Goldon D'or was third.

The win­ner's time was 1:24.2.

The day's lead­ing rid­er was ap­pren­tice Ki­mal San­to, who rode two win­ners in Coun­try Con­cert and Julie, while train­ing ho­n­ours fell to Harold Chadee.

Rac­ing re­turns on New Year's Day.
