Kalifa McCollin-Lopez was a powerful presence in the circle for the University of T&T (UTT), to pilot her team to a comfortable 64-37 win over MIC Tigers in the Premiership Division of the Courts All Sectors Netball League at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Tacarigua on Saturday.
The goal-attack slotted in 54 goals from 57 attempts to help her team remain unbeaten to start round two.
Her goal-shooter Shaniya Morgan nailed 10 of 14 tries in a match which was close, from the first pass. MIC opening shooters Reeka Seerattan (16/20) and Rehanna Ali (19/29) worked in tandem to have their team narrowly ahead at the end of the first quarter, 14-13.
However, with McCollin-Lopez brutal in attack, the University team seized total control in the second stanza, outscoring the Tigers 19-6, to lead 32-20 at the half and never looked back.
MIC has installed Aaliyah Modeste as the goal-shooter replacing Seerattan and she was perfect from her two attempts but not enough to trouble UTT, who went on to take a 49-28 advantage in the third quarter and dominated the fourth period to seal the 27-goal victory.
Later in the other Premiership match, Abeni Taylor, who replaced scoreless goal-shooter Akeela Rodriguez, who did not attempt a shot, netted 35 off 45 to guide Defence Force to a hard-fought win over Police, 46-39 after leading at the end of each quarter—9-7 in the first, 19-16 at halftime and 31-30 in the third before pulling away to take the seven-goal win.
Goal-attack Jody Sprott scored the other 11 goals from 25 tries for the winner.
For Police, Jeselle Navarro was the main contributor to the goals with 20 of 25. Gushier Grant, who replaced Navarro in the goal-shoot position, was almost flawless with 13 off 14 in a losing effort.
Earlier in the Championship Division, TT Post, MIC, Defence Force and Jabloteh triumphed in their respective matches.
TT Post, led by Nekeisha Gomes (25/34) defeated Police, 40-32, MIC, thanks to Tiffany Gonzalez (29/44) and Erica Job (12/23), beat UTT, 41-35 while in the closest contested match of the day, Defence Force trailed at the end of each quarter but emerged with the narrow two-goal (32-30) win and Jabloteh recovered from a shaky start to take a 41-30 win over Bermudez.
