Ochoa, Garcia on target as Benedict's beat Naps in Mayor's Cup

Josi­ah Ochoa and Der­rel Gar­cia, the Sec­ondary Schools Foot­ball League (SS­FL) 2024 "Play­er of the Year", were on tar­get on Thurs­day night to lead St Bene­dict's Col­lege to a 4-2 win over Na­pari­ma Col­lege in the San Fer­nan­do May­or's Cup.

Play­ing a Skin­ner Park in San Fer­nan­do, Ochoa led the La Ro­maine Li­ons with a brace, while Gar­cia, the scor­er of 20 goals, who led St Bene­dict's Col­lege to the South Zone In­ter­Col and Na­tion­al Co­ca-Co­la In­ter­Col ti­tles last year, scored an­oth­er.

Thane Devin­ish scored the oth­er goal for St Bene­dict's Col­lege, who at one point were train­ing their south zone ri­vals Na­pari­ma 2-0 at the half­time in­ter­val, fol­low­ing first-half goals from Aaron Ray­mond and Is­rael Joseph.

In­di­vid­ual ho­n­ours were award­ed to St Bene­dict’s stand­out play­ers in­clud­ing Adam Pierre, the "Most Valu­able Play­er", Devin­ish, the "Best Goal­keep­er" and Ochoa, for the "Most Goals". The awards were pre­sent­ed by May­or of San Fer­nan­do, Coun­cil­lor Robert Par­ris, along­side Víc­tor Hugo Morales Melén­dez, Am­bas­sador of Mex­i­co.

May­or Par­ris ap­plaud­ed the ath­letes’ per­for­mance and reaf­firmed the City’s com­mit­ment to nur­tur­ing foot­ball ex­cel­lence. He al­so thanked the TTFA and SS­FL for their con­tin­ued sup­port.

Ac­tion in the league, host­ed by the San Fer­nan­do City Cor­po­ra­tion in col­lab­o­ra­tion with the T&T Foot­ball As­so­ci­a­tion (TTFA) and the SS­FL, was ex­pect­ed to con­tin­ue last night with three match­es at Skin­ner Park. In the first, Point Fortin Pi­o­neers and the T&T De­fence Force were set to clash in the lone women's match at 5 pm, while at 7 pm, Club San­do and Pre­mier FC were set to do bat­tle.

De­fence Force men's team and Po­lice FC were ex­pect­ed to clash in the last match of the night at 9 pm.

Foot­ball ac­tion con­tin­ues dai­ly un­til Tues­day, with pro­fes­sion­al men's and women's teams from across T&T, in­clud­ing Pre­mier FC, Fire Ser­vice FC, Club San­do FC, De­fence Force, Po­lice FC, South Drs FC, Point Fortin Pi­o­neers and San Juan Jabloteh.

On Wednes­day, heavy and per­sis­tent rain forced the post­pone­ment of the open­ing match­es of the tour­na­ment be­tween Point Pi­o­neers women and Club San­do, and Pre­mier FC ver­sus Po­lice FC.
