Nicholas Paul made it two gold medals from as many finals and three overall for T&T when he edged out host cyclist Kevin Quintero in the men’s Keirin final at the International Cycling Union (UCI) Tissot Track Cycling Nation Cup on Saturday night.
The winner of the one Kilometre Time Trial at the same Alcides Nieto Patino Velodrome in Cali, Colombia on Friday night, the 22-year-old Paul used a burst of speed and stamina over the final 20 metres to hold off the fast closing Quintero for the gold medal in the penultimate event of the night in 10.452 seconds.
Another Colombian Santiago Ramirez took the bronze medal.
Canada’s Hugo Barrette, his team-mate Ryan Dodyk and Poland’s Daniel Rochina finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
Earlier on Saturday morning in the heats, Paul qualified from heat one of the First Round of the Keirin heats to the semifinals while countryman Keron Bramble missed out on being among the top two automatic qualifiers in heat three by one spot.
In heat one, Paul sped to victory in 10.105 seconds, the fastest time of all competitors in the heat, and was joined as an automatic qualifier by rival, Colombia’s Kevin Quintero from heat one.
However, in heat three, Bramble, who also made his Olympic debut in Tokyo crossed the line in third spot behind Poland’s Patryk Rajkowski who won in 10.403, and India's Esow Esow.
Bramble then had a chance to advance from heat three of four of the repechage round one when he came up against Czech Republic's Robin Wagner, Ecuador’s Cristian Gutierrez and Madagascar's Ridwan Sahrom.
But once again, Bramble failed to secure his passage to the next phase after he again placed behind the lone qualifier Wagner (10.726) and Sahrom.
And in the 12-man semifinals, Paul again showed his class early on by cementing his spot in the gold medal ride later on Saturday night when he raced home in 10.502 seconds in heat one ahead of fellow qualifiers, Rochina and Dodyk.
The other finishers in the heat were French duo, Rayan Helal and Sebastien Vigier, while Esow of India did not finish.

The other finishers in the final were Dodyk in fourth followed by Dominik Topinka of Czech Republic, India’s Ronaldo Laitonjam, Canadian Ethan Ogrodniczuk, and Mexico's Juan Carlos Ruiz.
Paul's time made him the fastest T&T rider at the Nations Cup and is only bettered by his own ride of 59.241 which was a national record.
