Alora ‘Peaches’ Morang led the way as the Wolfpack Gymnastics club exceeded all expectations at the recent 2022 Copa IGA International Competition at the Alberto Duran Arena in Panama City, Panama at the weekend.
‘Peaches’ as she is affectionately called, was named the overall winner of level 8, which is considered the highest level of competition at the tournament. This achievement came after she bagged two gold medals and as many bronze medals in that division.
The 10-year-old, standard four student of the Lower Morvant Government Primary School also placed fourth in the trampoline in level two while her teammate Annalise Alexander was sixth.
Team coach Dale Ali, in a release yesterday said: “ Peaches’ last competition was at level 3, and at only 10 years of age, she is one of our future homegrown prospects to represent the red, black, and white in the future. She trains 32 hours a week, six days, and is always in the gym early in the morning from five o’clock, four days a week, then off to school.”
Peaches was only one of the many highlights coming out of the club in Panama, as the club also recorded history with seven of its members competing in the trampoline event, and from it, Asia Ali and Onia Hepburn claiming the gold and the silver medal respectively in level one of their age groups.
There was also a bronze medal in the trampoline for Me-Hera Callender, while Zoey Ottley and Yliana-Rose Sancho finished fourth and fifth places respectively.
Meanwhile, Zariah Gittens-Dopwell was also in winner’s row at the weekend, as she captured third overall in all the events, following her silver-medal performance in the floor as well as the balance beam.
Ali said it was a breadth of fresh air for his club and his gymnasts following the two-year shut-down caused by the covid-19 pandemic.
“With our Academy being a faith-based organization, we pay particular attention to the mental, spiritual, psychological, physical, and holistic development of all our athletes, who start as early as two years of age. The Wolfpack is now in preparation to represent T&T at the PAGU Hopes competition in Bogota, Colombia this December, followed by the Olympia Caribbean Classic in April,” Ali explained.
“Our sport can only go upwards with more positive events and activities on the horizon and as echoed by the team’s mantra, ‘At Olympia Life is Awesome.”
