Nykel Peters dominated the competition for a second consecutive term by taking the top position in the Intermediate level two category at the ninth in-house tournament of the Point Fortin Chess Centre (PFCC), at the South West Regional Indoor Sporting Arena in Point Fortin held on November 16.
Gabriella Maitland and Makayla Joseph fought hard to attain second and third places, respectively.
Peters’ chess accomplishments were not limited to the in-house tournament as he advances to the semi-finals in the 18 years and under category along with Amand Basdeo in the 12 years and under category, both from the St Patrick region in the first-ever Mindsports Tournament. Monifa Corrion also represented the Centre at the recently held Lynette Rampersad Foundation Schools Junior Chess Tournament.
As always, there was fierce competition among participants in all categories, especially in the Novice A category with a record 19 participants.
Josiah St Louis dominated and took the top place in the Novice A category followed by Ssence Samuel and Keshon Dogan. The top position in Novice B was taken by Darion Bahadursingh followed by Jabari Broadbelt and Abasi Alexander.
In the Intermediate level one category, Nathaniel Claxton dominated the category followed by Nicholai Baptiste and Micah Francis, who won first place in Novice B in the last in-house tournament.
Certificates of participation and perfect attendance were also awarded to 77 per cent of the participants enrolled for the term. Centre coordinators Dr Jo-Anne Sewlal and Raymond Aaron thanked this term’s team of dedicated trainers which included Shedron Collins, Lincoln Joseph, Dirmid Nicholas, Frankie Permell, Franklyn Neckles, Charlene Mitchell, Indira Samaroo and new trainer, Danielle Small.
It was an eventful term for PFCC with two of its students, Nicholai Baptiste and Zachary George, being selected to be part of this year's cohort of Atlantic’s Point Fortin’s Finest Leadership Development Programme, which selects ten students from Point Fortin primary schools that scored the top ten highest marks in the SEA exam each year.
