Eight points separate the seven teams at the bottom of the 17-team standings as relegation looms.
With four rounds of matches remaining, including Saturday’s fixtures, to conclude the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago (SporTT) Boys Premiership Division of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL), it promises to be a mad scramble to avoid demotion.
In the bottom half of the standings, 10th-placed St Anthony’s College (15 points) can virtually clear themselves of danger when they take on 11th-placed Malick Secondary at the St Mary’s College Ground on Serpentine Road, St Clair. The Tigers are coming off a confidence-boosting 3-0 victory over St Augustine Secondary and will be eager to keep that momentum going this afternoon. Victory will push them to 18 points, while Malick will be equally anxious to secure a win and pull away from the relegation zone.
The bottom four teams will be relegated to the Championship Division, while the top three teams from the Championship Division’s Big 5 Playoff will earn promotion to the Premiership for next season. As it stands, 14th-placed Mucurapo West (8 points), 15th-placed St Augustine (8 points), 16th-placed Trinity College Moka (8 points), and 17th-placed Trinity College East (5 points) are destined for relegation unless they can produce a miraculous turnaround in their remaining matches.
Mucurapo West, in their return season to the top flight, host Naparima College today, while St Augustine Secondary, the 'Green Machine', travels to the Honeymoon Ground, Tunapuna, to face Hillview College. Elsewhere, Trinity College Moka host Fatima College at home, while Trinity College East take on St Benedict’s College at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Balmain, Couva.
Also fighting to avoid demotion are 12th-placed Queen’s Royal College (QRC), who host Presentation College San Fernando on 12 points. Coach Kenwyne Jones’ side has been inconsistent this season, a struggle underscored by their record of 12 points from 12 matches. However, QRC will need to find another gear against the Southerners if they are to get at least a point from the contest.
San Juan North Secondary will also need something special when they host Arima North Secondary at home.
